Help Center Domains & Cloudflare

Point your domain to your website

To show your SoNET website at your own domain (for example www.mybusiness.com), let Cloudflare manage the domain's DNS, point it to the SoNET server, and add the domain to your site.

Before you start

  • You own the domain and can log in where you bought it (the registrar).
  • A free Cloudflare account.

Move the domain's DNS to Cloudflare

Step 1. In Cloudflare, add your domain (Add a site / Onboard a domain) and choose the Free plan. Cloudflare shows you two nameservers for your domain.

Step 2. Log in at your registrar and replace the domain's nameservers with the two from Cloudflare. Each registrar does this a little differently: the forum post "How To Change Nameserver (DNS) - Provider Specific Instructions" links to the instructions of more than 30 registrars, from Amazon and GoDaddy to Namecheap and Squarespace.

Step 3. Wait until Cloudflare says the domain is active. This can take from a few minutes to a day.

Step 4. In Cloudflare, set the A record, SSL and caching as in Cloudflare settings for your SoNET website.

Point it to your site

Step 5. On your site, open ADMIN › SEO › Domains, click Add new Domain, type the domain and click Save (see Domains).

Step 6. The domain is approved by the owner of the SoNET engine that hosts your site. After that, your website opens at your domain.

Check it worked

Open your domain in a private window: your SoNET website loads, over https.

Good to know

  • Write down the old nameservers before you change them, so you can go back if needed.
  • Keep e-mail working: if your domain has e-mail, make sure its MX records are in Cloudflare too before you switch.
